Apple: "Tiger" Server. "Tiger" Server will feature weblog hosting, an iChat server and tools to migrate more easily from Windows servers. [MacInTouch]

The server version of Tiger will offer weblog hosting with Blojsom. As far as I know Apple servers are used mostly in office environments. With Safari RSS and Blojsom Apple is becoming a very interesting k-logging environment.

Among the other news from yesterday's Apple Developers Conference keynote, it's interesting to note that apple picked the blue RSS icon and not the orange XML one to represent RSS (and Atom).

Even if I'm a long time orange icon user and fan, I think I can imagine Apple thinking: "why using an icon with the word 'XML' to link to something we call 'RSS'?". It's true: users are smart, but why making their life harder?

For some time XML icons were popping up everywhere. They linked RSS feeds but also other kind of XML files such as OPML blogrolls (oops, I have just realized that I still have such an icon here) and I do agree that it might have been confusing for users not living in our loop.

It's not that by choosing the blue icon Apple has closed all games but they definetly made a significant step in one direction. Soon we will see if users will start switching to the blue icon. Meanwhile I guess I'll adopt both for my site.

Also, from the demo's I've seen, Safari should solve another issue: users clicking on an RSS icon will not end up watching a page of code anymore but should see a nicely displayed set of posts. Cool.

The London Symposium on Social Software for the Enterprise is going to happen in only two weeks. We already had a wiki, now we have created a weblog where information about the event, thoughts, ideas, slides, comments and other assorted content will be posted in the next days. Stay tuned and don't forget to subscribe to the feed. Wiki, blog, feed... I guess that next we'll have to create an IRC channel :-)

Taxonomy tools organize searching. Enterprise search vendor Verity this week will introduce taxonomy and classification management software designed to make it easier to find business information. [InfoWorld: Top News]
It's good to see others working in the same field we have been exploring for a while. We strongly believe that easy to use, bottom-up taxonomy management tools can be very the base for very valuable knowledge management solutions. When coupled with k-logs, you have the perfect match.

Apple Launches ITunes in Europe. Apple Computers Inc. launched its highly anticipated iTunes Music Store in Europe on Tuesday, expanding the popular digital music service to users in Britain, France and Germany. Apple chief executive Steve Jobs said iTunes would be available without subscription. The charge for downloading a single track would be 79 pence ($1.43) in the United... [Associated Press business headlines via GoUpstate.com]

The news is good, but "Britain, France and Germany" are not "Europe" as many American companies seems to keep thinking. At most they are in Europe. And many people in Britain are not even convinced of this.

Very good piece by Ross Mayfield about email.

It reminded me of an old customer. We used to train this company to use MiniCad, a CAD application. One day they called complaining that they could not write more than 512 chars in a text field and that they were having problems writing faxes with it.

They were using MiniCad as a text editor.

I guess it's a rule for all users: they will try to achieve things using the tools they have at hand, regardless of what those tools were designed for.

I think that many of the problems we are seeing today with email are related to the fact that users were left too much time alone with this tool and started to try doing everything with it. As soon as they are provided with better tools email usage falls sharply (as Socialtext's latest case study shows).

This morning the Italian Government has started sending SMS messages to all 57 millions Italian GSM phone holders (this is basically every single Italian above age 2) to remind us that tomorrow and Sunday we are voting. I have already received mine.

Social Tools for Enterprises Symposium in London. Now that we have the agenda sorted I am happy to announce the 1st, London,

which I am organising with the support of KM Cluster. We think this is a great opportunity to start showing people that social tools (both people tools and software tools) are ready for prime time and deliver bottom line benefits to enterprises.

The event will be held on Monday 12th July at the Bloomsbury Square Training Centre. We've got a great list of people leading sessions which we think will be a cut above the usual chalk & talk conference fare. We really want a conversation to emerge from this event which will help to enlighten people interested in social tools but unsure how to put them to best use in their own contexts.

So we have:
Paolo and I will also be there.

I think it has the potential to be a great event and a great day I hope that you will come and join us. Please tell all your friends!

[Curiouser and curiouser!]
Matt is doing a great job organising this event. It will happen the week after BlogTalk and thanks to low cost airlines, London is probably the cheapest city to fly to from anywhere in Europe. I hope there a lot of people will choose to join us.

Joi Ito: Rock star!. The AP has a huge article about Joi. I mean, it's just the mainstream press which doesn't impress us bloggers one tiny bit, but, um, Wow! [Joho the Blog]

Uh... it looks like on Thursday I'll be meeting a star.
